Dr. Christopher DuCoin, MD, MPH, FACS, FSAGES, FASMBS is a board-certified general surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of South Florida. He has expertise in Foregut (esophageal & stomach) surgery, Bariatric surgery, and advanced surgical endoscopy. Dr. DuCoin is respected at the international level for his work with GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease), and its’ interplay between obesity and esophageal cancer. He is a national leader in robotic surgery and one of the top teachers in the country when it comes to training minimally invasive and robotic procedures. Dr. DuCoin is the Vice Chair of Surgery at the University of South Florida and Chief of the Division of GI & General Surgery, while also directing the GERD & Esophageal Program. At Tampa General Hospital he is the Chief of the Digestive Diseases Institute, the Director of Surgical Suites, and the Director of the TGH Robotics Program. At that national level Dr. DuCoin is the president of a section within the American College of Surgeons (ACS), is on the Board of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and chairs the research committee. Dr. DuCoin has over 100 publications, has trained over 60 surgical residents and is the Director of the Fellowship Program.

Prior to joining the University of South Florida, Dr. DuCoin was Division Chief at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. While there he started two unique bariatric programs, one of which was specifically for the Medicaid population. This program provided access to this life saving surgery to a marginalized population. The Medicaid program gained national attention for its unique and special purpose within the state of Louisiana. While at Tulane he was also the Clerkship Director, a role responsible for teaching the medical students. While Dr. DuCoin enjoyed his time in New Orleans, Florida has always been home. He and his wife, Mattie, met when they were only sixteen in high school in Stuart, on the east coast of Florida. While life took them in separate directions for a while, they reconnected in their early thirties while Dr. DuCoin was in New Orleans. After they had their first daughter, Sophia, they knew it was time to return home. Mattie had worked at USF previously and described it as a fantastic hospital and university to work for. They were fortunate to both find positions at USF and TGH and feel blessed to be active members both in the hospital and the community. They now have three children: Sophia, Elizabeth (Ella), and Callahan (Cal). Dr. DuCoin takes on some of the most challenges cases in the state as a large referral center, but says that, “While medicine can be extremely challenging, it can be kept simple by treating each patient as if they were your family.”
